White Shark Eyes

Photograph by David Litchfield.

Do you remember the memorable Quint's monologue:
"One of its features is ... lifeless eyes, wrist, black eyes and still. When one approaches, it seems that has no life, until he bites ... Those little black eyes turn white, and then ... ah then you hear a tremendous and terrible cry, the water turns red, and despite splash and crying, you see how these beasts and they'll come tearing. I wrote the actor who embodied the great Robert Shaw, from John Milius version that had developed the script for Howard Sackler.

Admittedly, in the plane Shaw dramatic was the success of all. Even today, nearly 40 years after the release of Jaws, in our collective imagination persists the shocking image of a hellish whose black eyes devoid of life, seem fixed and dispassionately observe from biding his time. Somehow remind us of the dark empty sockets of a skull-including evil smile.

In terms of reality, however, things are quite different. Neither the shark is a bug bloodthirsty and evil, or his eyes are black as death. Up close and in the right light, what we see are actually some blue eyes very dark where it is possible to distinguish the circular shape of the iris, able to focus an object orientation. So, as any vertebrate alive and (pun intended) kicking: an elephant, a wolf or 4th neighbor D.

He dyes almost metaphysical monster, built from the Spielberg movie symbol irrational and hostile nature, is suddenly transformed into a magnificent living of extraordinary beauty that we never tire of admiring.

Stunning photograph of Juanmi Alemany held in Guadeloupe.
Once in a while one needs to abstract from all these problems that distress us all the time, of reality so hostile that we have out there, and take refuge in the contemplation of an animal so beautiful. Even if for a few moments, with a post as short as this.
